These animals are notable not only for their tiny size, but also for being smart and social creatures that can survive in quite extreme conditions. Let's learn more about lovely dik-diks.
#1 A fully grown dik-dik is 12-16 inches (30-40 cm) tall and weighs up to 14 pounds (6 kg)
#2 Their name comes from an onomatopoeia of the repetitive "dik-dik" whistle through their long, tubular snouts when they are in danger. This sound alerts other animals of danger too.
#3 The biggest threat to dik-diks are humans – some people hunt them for their skin to make gloves.
#4 Dik-diks mate for life and live in couples.
#5 Male dik-diks have small black horns (3 in or 7.6 cm)
#6 The black spots in the corner of their eyes are preorbital glands – they produce special secretion dik-diks use to mark their territory.
#7 Dik-diks successfully survive in highly arid regions, as they lose very little water from their system while exhaling thanks to their hairy proboscis. They are also excellent at controlling their body temperature and metabolic rate.
